Genre Theory
What is Genre? Genre is the term for any category of literature or other forms of art/culture, for example music genres are formed by conventions that change over time as new genres are invented and the use of old ones where discontinued. In film theory, genre refers to the method of film categorisation based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. Read more at: www.slideshare.net/leannacatherina/genre-media In TimeThe film In Time is mainly a sci-fi film with many other genres within this one genre, this film has many conventions of a sci-fi film such as; it makes the audience think about the diegesis that we live in, for example it uses set times to when people die, this time is also used as currency, this makes us think about our own lives and wonder if we should change the way we live, in a similar way The Matrix uses this convention by making us think that the diegesis that we live in isn't real. Also In Time has the convention of futuristic technology, this is used through the use of technology to scan a persons time to pay for everything, this is also shown in the film Serenity where there is spaceships and futuristic weapons, this makes us wonder how far our recent technology can go and if we will ever get to that level. There is also a lot of conventions of a gangsta film in In Time, for example the film uses a lot of heist type scenes, this is also very similar to The Matrix where Neo and Trinity break into a building to rescue Morpheus, this scene is very useful because the two characters are shot in black trench coats, this is also very similar to lots of scenes from westerns as it is shot from below to make them look powerful, however it could make these characters look like the villains as villains stereotypically wear a lot of black clothing. In a similar way there is a scene from In Time where Will and Sylvia break into a bank wearing a lot of black this could portray them as the villains even though we know them to be the heroes. SerenityThe film Serenity I would class as a sci-fi/western, this is because there is both conventions of a sci-fi film and a western film.
The conventions of a western in serenity are; the main convention of a western in serenity is the use of civilised vs savage, this is shown through the reavers (being the indians) and the group (being the cowboys), also there is a scene in serenity which would be classed as a stand off, this scene involves the group being chased by the reavers and they have to shoot them to escape.
